The Art of the Knockoff
I find it so interesting that retailers are stepping up their game in terms of researching and trend-forecasting. Part me thinks this practice wrong, in that retailers are conjuring up designer counterparts to their high-end origins. If anything, this undermines the designs and profits of the original designers. I completely understand the system of how designer goods are imitated and then mass produced for the public. I mean we all saw The Devil Wears Prada.
Yet, the other part of me would like designer aesthetics at an affordable price. The boot pictured above is sold and produced for Target. It’s design stems from Danner, a company that specializes in outdoor and work boots.
With the public being able to obtain designer looks for a cheaper price, it seems that anyone can achieve “the look”. The elitism involved with fashion is thus eliminated and open to everyone. No longer are items available to the limited few, but can now be found in a variety of interpretations.
Best,
Patrick
