The Filmmaker I Never Was

To Whom This May Concern,

Sometimes I wish I was still a film major. After watching Super 8 tonight, I couldn’t help but think about my previous desire to pursue a career in screenwriting and film. Initially, I wanted to do film because of the storytelling nature. With films, you encompass both the visual aspect and narration. For me to visually bring together my thoughts to life into a production seems like such an amazing tool let alone feat. To wield that much creative freedom is so inspiring to me.

To draw from a few sources, if I could pick and choose how my movies would look, feel, and sound, here are a few examples.

  • Christopher Nolan’s ability to create ensemble stories. Films like Inception and The Dark Knight focus on a group of characters and how each role supports one another. Not once do his characters out shine or lose momentum when put into an ensemble.
  • David Fincher’s sense of tone. Fincher knows how to create a tone and stick with it throughout an entire film. Whether it may be fear or angst, most of his films revolve around how this sense of emotion develops or brings together a story. See Panic Room or The Social Network.
  • Sophia Coppola’s mastery of atmospheric sounds, let alone demonstrating how the sound of silence can be so loud. There are moments in Lost and Translation and Somewhere in which words are not needed, instead, the silence of a scene can tell you more than what anyone can ever say or do.
  • J.J. Abram’s eye for crafting a fluid story. His ability to sequentially line up events into a narration looks so effortless. Every scene, moment, shot, is a vital component to the overall picture. Super 8 is definitely a testament to this key trait as well as Star Trek.

When watching these guys at their best, you can really see what they are truly capable of.

Sincerely,
Patrick
